Odisha has recorded nearly 50 unnatural deaths of elephants between April 2024 and October 2024 due to electrocution, train accidents, and poaching. With the state housing over 2,000 elephants, this surge has concerned the public. Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia has ordered a comprehensive probe and called for stricter accountability and safety measures. Special teams like Gaja Sathis and Rapid Action Forces have been deployed, and 31 wildlife courts have been set up to fast-track justice. Conservationists stress that stronger, on-ground protection is urgently needed to save Odisha’s elephants.
